About the Author
Samuel Adler is Professor Emeritus at the Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard School of Music. The book is worth little more than a curiosity. There is no answer key with this text, which makes it only marginally more useful than a squeegee for a submarine. I’ve found it was useless to try to order the instructor’s manual [which does include the answer key]; the publisher seems to be a narrow-minded mobocrat who refuses to sell the instructor’s manual to anyone but registered music professors, ‘for reasons of security’ – whatever that means. I wish they’d been honest enough to point that out in their description before I bought the book. Unfortunately, I didn’t read all of the reviews in detail before I bought the book, otherwise I would’ve seen other buyers made the same mistake I did. Maybe my 1-star rating will serve as a flag to others and allow them to avoid making my mistake. Bottom line, unless you’re a music student registered at a bona fide university and your professor requires you to buy this text as part of a course you’re taking, don’t waste your money.
After having bought the textbook and the CD's I kind of wish I hadn't bought the workbook. I think it would be great if I had someone to grade me or check my work, but I realized that since I am studying on my own I have no way to know whether what I do is correct. This doesn't reflect on the book itself. I believe if I was in a class it would be pretty useful for helping one study what is taught in the textbook. If you don't have to buy the workbook for a class or something I wouldn't recommend it. The textbook and the CD's are sufficient.
I used this book for my instrumentation class at the university I attend. I made an A in the class and it's because of my dedication but also the intuitive and logical setup of the material in this book. The workbook offers many exercises on learning everything relating to orchestration. It's worth your time even if you don't get the textbook just to get the workbook and brush up on the technique of orchestration.
