Review

In this astute, passionate, rigorously honest book about her friendships with three extraordinary women, Miller delineates the mysterious geography of those attachments we are not born into, but choose freely. The longing, pain, confusion, envy, and joy that inhabit the often unarticulated distance between "me” and “you” are so alive on these pages, they are still resonating inside me. I loved reading this book. (Siri Hustvedt, author of A Woman Looking at Men Looking at Women)In My Brilliant Friends, Nancy K. Miller depicts the life-altering importance of deep and nourishing friendships between and among women. Through vivid details and Miller’s singular point of view, we witness her transformative relationships with Carolyn Heilbrun, Naomi Schor, and Diane Middlebrook and their enduring love, growth, and collective power. (Min Jin Lee, author of Free Food for Millionaires and Pachinko, a finalist for the National Book Award)Of Nancy K. Miller's many illuminating books, My Brilliant Friends may be my favorite―for its sculpted lucidity, its lancing details, its interlocking plots, and its virtuoso attention to emotional ambivalence. Like Hilton Als's The Women, Miller's book is a classic triple-decker account of entanglement and rupture. She reminds us, with a witty yet mournful gracefulness, that every friendship is a complex work of art, demanding fastidious analysis and enraptured recounting. (Wayne Koestenbaum, author of My 1980s & Other Essays)A new book by Nancy K. Miller is always a treat. This compulsively readable triptych of her friendships with Carolyn Heilbrun, Naomi Schor, and Diane Middlebrook will touch, delight, and enlighten anyone who has grown up under the influence of feminism. (Susan Gubar, author of The Woman Writer and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Imagination)Nancy K. Miller writes with shimmering intelligence, grace, courage, and hard-won candor about her friendships with three other significant writers, all feminists, now all dead: Carolyn Heilbrun, Naomi Schor, and Diane Middlebrook. Miller herself is surviving cancer. Both heartbreaking and life-sustaining, My Brilliant Friends proves that death can be the mother of beauty. (Catharine R. Stimpson, University Professor and Dean Emerita, Graduate School of Arts and Science, New York University)Nancy K. Miller has a gift for friendship and a mind for memoir. Reflecting on feminism, ambition, competition, and loss in these candid, tender stories of three passionate women intellectuals who died too soon, she has given a gift to readers who know the importance and complexity of female friendship. (Elaine Showalter, professor emerita of English, Princeton University)I loved reading My Brilliant Friends. It’s a fascinating and revealing look at the texture―good and bad―of feminist friendships, and, crucially, academic life for women. It is also an inspiring testament to three remarkable feminists, each operating in her own style. An important book for generations of feminists―those established, and those to come. (Hillary Chute, author of Graphic Women: Life Narrative and Contemporary Comics)A stunning elegy to the intimacy of friendships among women, and a book in which closeness is felt through the act of thinking. (Maggie Taft Booklist (starred review))The result is a compassionate homage to the book’s three extraordinary subjects. My Brilliant Friends is not memoir as therapy, but memoir as monument....Unlike so many confessional documents, My Brilliant Friends is written in a genuinely exceptional circumstance by a genuinely exceptional person. This is a stark and honest account of the lives of four incredible women, the author Nancy K. Miller and three powerful friends. For those familiar with Miller's other work this book adds a delicacy and depth to some of earlier first person accounts of her life in letters. For those new to Miller's work but interested in women's friendships, this book will be a welcome addition. I was sad to put it down and look forward to rereading. A must read! My favorite book of the new year!

Brutally honest, highly intelligent, sad in parts yet highly entertaining, Nancy K. Miller gives a detailed account of the arch of her friendship with three contemporaneous, highly regarded feminist writers. Nothing in this near perfect book seems superfluous or overdone, every detail grabbing, every literary interlude illuminating, every thought compassionate yet unsparing. Miller describes the historical sweep of her friendships, and of female friendships in general. I loved it!

A beautifully written, deeply moving memoir of feminist friendships. Miller describes how academia affects feminist friendships in positive and negative ways and accounts for painful losses that precede the loss to death. I strongly recommend this memoir to anyone interested in friendships among women. KAJ

This is a very satisfying book to savour. It is a wonderful mix of academic ingenuity and deep personal insight. A very successful and affecting meditation on what it means to have a friend, and indeed to be a friend to someone else. MB

A beautifully written yet melancholy account of three friendships that transformed the author's life. I could not put it down. I particularly admire the way Miller is able to read her experiences in relation to other very influential pieces of literature and memoir.

Miller's writing is absolutely engrossing--brisk and frank. I read the book in a single day, mostly because I couldn't stop. She tells the story of three friendships lived through feminism. She documents the love and affection they shared, but what's in the crevices: competition, silences, pain, confusion. But this book is not a downer. Miller tells these stories with so much love and admiration that even the really hard parts feel like a joy. Along the way, she brings in philosophical voices on friendship from Montaigne to Woolf. She does this with a light touch, updating and revising their ideas. By the end, I felt in the grip of riveting stories but also like I had new tools for thinking about what friendship means--and what my own friends mean to me.

Great read! Couldn’t put the book down yet wanted to savor every paragraph. My Brilliant Friends will make you think, cry, remember, admire. You will also write immediately to tell your friends to read it.I don’t know when I’ve been quite so mesmerized/bedazzled/educated by a memoir. No platitudes anywhere, just wisdom and experience purchased at a steep price sometimes sprinkled with a dose of ironic, often self-deprecating, humor. Miller’s friends fairly jump off the page in places. Each of the three chapters brims with telling anecdotes, judicious paragraph closing lines, witty characterizations and one-liners. What impresses me even more are the ways the author brings so much intelligence but also so much modesty and self-knowledge to all three stories and her own. This is a DAMN HARD balancing act. Really. But it is done brilliantly. The way Miller weaves in and out of her own memories, the lives and the writing of Carolyn Heilbrun, Naomi Schor, and Diane Middlebrook, and others’ life writing and work on friendship worked like a charm for me. The fact that the author has read, studied, taught, and thought about women’s friendship, feminism, and memoir-writing for a long time shows in the deft writing and the fine-honed thinking. There is never a simple anything in this book. Yet everything, in all its complexities, is astoundingly clear and so beautifully written with such a light touch, I sometimes gasped. This is, however, no Hallmark card to friendship. Its honesty leaves room for the hurt, the conundrums, the troubled conscience that characterize all intense and loving relationships particularly among those in similar, competitive fields. In several places, I burst into tears—for the author’s pain and thoughts of my close friends now lost to cancer as well as the other losses that are bound to come.I love all of Miller’s books but this one is perfection in its candor and poignancy. A triumph!Assign it in the undergraduate/graduate classroom about friendship, relationships, life writing, memoir and memory. Buy it for friends and colleagues who yearn to read something hard yet somehow light because it is both true and beautiful. Keep one for yourself to go back to as the years go by and use it as a wellspring of passages and wisdom to reflect upon with your own brilliant friends.

This is a book for those of you enraptured by Elena Ferrante's brilliant friends and fascinated by the nature of women's friendship. Nancy K. Miller has always written memoirs with a critical voice and here she delves into the complicated and close friendships unique to most women. Her intellectual insight and personal probing make all of us look at our friendships in a new light. This is a book for you and all your girlfriends who make up who you are and how you think.
