This is a good book if all you want are examples of elegant script, but it is not a book to actually teach how-to do elegant script. Therefore, I was somewhat disappointed in the book, but will use it for inspiration.
The Universal Penman is a wonderful book to pour over when you want to see a variety of flourishes and Copperplate script. If you do any calligraphy, then this book is a great addition to your reference library. You can dissect the examples and see how to incorporate them into your own work. Or you can just admire the sheer beauty of the handwritten word.
George Bickham's monumental work , both the artwork and calligraphy is stunning. It's full of writing samples from the classical period of round hand calligraphy. You can just admire the sheer beauty of the handwritten word. George Bickham the Elder (1684-1758) was the finest calligraphic engraver of his day. He was also an excellent penman, as 18 of these plates show, but he employed 25 leading writing masters to compose the bulk of this, his best known work, a collection of writing exemplars which helped to popularize the English Round Hand script in the 18th century.
As Philip Hofer writes in the forward, "Altogether, there are many reasons why every intelligent person should take a renewed interest in good handwriting." Even if you're not a calligrapher, you should buy this book simply because it is BEAUTIFUL. The work done by George Bickham inside is stunning--both the artwork and calligraphy. Seriously, if you have any interest whatsoever in lettering, you will love this book.
I have enjoyed this book thoroughly. I love the different scripts and flourishes and the meaningful quotations. I use it at least 3 or 4 times a week to practice my copperplate and Spencerian writing. I would highly recommend it.
Not what I was looking for.
if you are interested in Calligraphy, they you need to have this book. The examples are beautiful and they provide an excellent guide for students of the art.
One of the best resources for pointed pen lettering that exists. Loaned my first copy and had to replace it.
