I have waited about a year to write this review, because I wanted to see if this program really worked for me. I am a 55-year-old man who has been overweight most of his life. I started with this book, and went from there into one of Julie's conference call support programs. It has been a struggle at times, but I have lost about 30 pounds and am still losing about a pound a week. I used to binge on cookies and chips a few times a week, but it's been about 10 months since I did that. I am sitting here at 1:30 p.m., having had only a light breakfast, and for the first time in my life not dying to run out and stuff my face at noon every day. I guess I'll get lunch at some point today, but I don't worry that I'm going to stuff my face with a burger and fries.I've tried innumerable weight loss programs over the years, and read dozens of books on the subject, but Julie's program is the first I've found that addressed the core problem: that I was binging to ease the pain of decades-old resentments and emotional damage. To some, that will sound too touchy-feely and like I'm indulging in feelings of victimization, but it's not that at all. With Julie's help, I have for the first time identified the problems so I can start to let them all go, forgive and forget, get on with my life, and get my body and emotions healthy again. Julie is the only person I've encountered who looks at weight problems from every angle, and whose approach is entirely rational and scientific -- and sympathetic, too.Not everything she's suggested resonates with me, but I've been able to "pick and choose" the parts of her program that address my needs. Much of it seemed extreme at first, but now it seems like the norm. Knock on wood, but after a year -- and now feeling probably better about myself and my future than I ever have -- I think I might be to the point where food will never again be a daily struggle for me.I STRONGLY recommend this book to anyone who has struggled for years with a weight problem. It's a different approach and, in my experience, it works. Diet programs do not.

I had to stop reading just to write this review. I am only halfway through, but I cannot contain my satisfaction so far.This book is a perfect balance of empowering tools AND recommendations to seek professional help. This validates the fact that we have the power within us to help ourselves, but it is also perfectly OK to have someone else help out as well.She also does not promote the "positive thoughts only" mentality. Her tools promote actually addressing this pain and being there for yourself, fully. Owning the pain, instead of orphaning them. Very few other books/people out there realize the need for this. Two other people that I have found to encourage this approach are Teal Swan (The Completion Process) and Marianne Williamson (A Course in Weight Loss). I am so happy to have found this author and this book because she presents different tools that add to the other ones I have gained. And having multiple tools in the toolbox is so great!She talks about different concepts in ways "beginners" as well as people with more spiritual experience can follow and gain from. Her tone is loving while talking real talk. In addition to the tools to dig deep, she also provides ways to discern between emotions that need soothing or shifting. For example, grieving past hurts in addition to shifting negative self talk so that when we release the charged pain, we have adopted healthier thoughts, beliefs, patterns, etc. So instead of spouting positive affirmations that we cannot believe about ourselves, she teaches how to shift thoughts into a different frame that is believable to us.This book introduces ways to make REAL change, DEEP change, and LASTING change. I can't wait to continue, implement, and restore my relationship with myself.

Julie M. Simon actually GETS it.I've been an emotional eater about since I was seven, and this is the first book I've ever read that truly nails it for me. There are hundreds of shrinks and authors who "Don't struggle with food themselves" but who want to tell me that "Food won't fix your problems". (Oh, REALLY? Gee, thanks for telling me that). There are a lot of books on this subject that are not only way off, but also worsen the problem with lack of empathy and understanding, with passive-aggressive shaming, with strict author voice, etc, that only made it worse for me.But this book is really, truly different. Because it's not telling you how to lose weight. It's telling you how to meet your own needs that you've BEEN meeting with food.I have only read this book once, but I will be memorizing most of it. It's really, truly what I need. I'll write a later review updated on if I actually lost the weight I want to lose.But at the very least, after reading this, I didn't feel alone. Every other emotional eating book left me a little cold and stranded. This one makes me feel comforted and empowered at the same time. And that's quite an achievement in print.
