This is a classic. Illustrations that are clean and captivating; a text that meanders in and out of rhyme, subtly all add up to a great learning book. The illustrations accurately depict the plants, animals and insects so that they are clearly recognizable. The text has a cadence to it, even if it doesn't always rhyme that helps move the story forward. This book is one of a series of three- they are all great. As a former preschool director, I found these books were enjoyed by both our youngest and our oldest children, and were definitely part of our curriculum - this one for springtime, especially. The reason for a flower? To propagate plants, clearly... but, as the illustrations show, also to enjoy!
I loved her books on camouflage and the book on egg-layers, but this book just was not up to the same standard. I kept thinking something had to be missing at the start of the book, but all the pages were there. It just did not flow well at the start of the book and started off with bees and birds not plants. The book also ended with a mushroom with a note of how plants who did not have seeds were interesting too - expect that mushrooms ARE NOT plants and they technically have "seeds" called spores. (Note: mushrooms are fungi which is a completely different kingdom from plants). Also because the book jumped into pollinators instead of flowers - there was not a very good explanation of their purpose.
I bought my first copy of this book many years ago and saw how the children enjoyed it...both looking at the pictures and having it read to them... So I wanted this copy for a gift so another child will have the opportunity to enjoy the story and the nice illustrations....
My daughter who is 6yrs old requested a book about flowers for Christmas and this was the only one I could find for kids. It is ok but not very interesting in my opinion and apparently she agrees because she's only asked me to read it once in the two months we have had it.
Science and easy readying for the whole family can never go wrong with educational fun ever. Love it
One of many Ruth Hellers books. This is so great! The pictures are amazing. The book holds their attention and keeps them interested. A fantastic teaching tool. Awesome bedtime reading. Wonderfully helpful for explaining flowers and plants. I highly recommend this book and all her books for that matter.
Got these for my children. They love them. The pictures and text are beautiful and very informative.
