My wife bought Dr. Lacovara"s book because I volunteer at the Edelman Fossil Quarry in New Jersey. Many times a year, Dr. Lacovara is present when school groups and the public are allowed to dig for 65 million year old fossils. For each group, Dr. Lacovara gives a brief talk explaining why this site is so important. "Why Dinosaurs Matter" is written in the same style as his talks. Easily understandable for any age, Dr. Lacovara explains in 156 small pages what other authors try to relate in 500 or more pages. This is the information and really all the information we who are not scientists need to know to understand why the study of dinosaurs is so important. Al Hagovsky.
Dr. Lacovara's book is very informative about conditions the dinosaurs faced and about just what constitutes a dinosaur and, indeed, why they matter. What I really appreciated is that it is written so that the "average" person can understand his points, with knowledge, humor and down-to-earth explanations.
This book is an absolutely must read! Dr. Ken is an awesome role model and hero for aspiring scientists and dinosaur lovers. The book combines a fun and interesting perspective on dinosaurs with a powerful message about the importance of understanding the profound effect of the past on our future. Dr. Ken's love for dinosaurs is contagious!
Like all TED Books, Why Dinosaurs Matter is meant to be read quickly while also being packed full of information. Dinosaurs have always fascinated people and this book takes you on a brief tour of some dinosaurs, including Dreadnoughtus which was discovered by the author. It details what happened after the meteor hit in the Gulf of Mexico and then relates why learning about dinosaurs, and what happened to them, is important to us now. I recommend this book to anyone interested in dinosaurs.
Thrilled with this book! I have been following Ken Lacovara's work for a long time, and his book doesn't disappoint. The past is the key to our future, unearthing that, is the only way this planet can continue. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did.
I’m an admitted science and (especially) dinosaur freak, but this book was a treat beyond my high expectations. The author educated and entertained me with information and insights that ranged far beyond “dino-stuff, while using the knowledge gained through the search for and research on the creatures to illuminate many significant, current issues. Wow!
This is a terrific book, closely reasoned and beautifully written. The author cogently reviews the history of geology, paleontology, and evolution with a passionate and entertaining enthusiasm. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in science.
