Are these reviews lumped together for all the volumes? I'm reviewing volume 1, and it is glued, not spiral, and 200 puzzles, not 50, as some previous reviews state.I'm not particularly thrilled with these puzzles. For one thing, the printing is not sharp, causing characters to run together. I find many of the clues to be way too easy, and too many of the answers are obscure facts (type of grass used to thatch African huts?). I much prefer the other way around -- common answers to obscure or clever clues.
The puzzles are great. Hard but solvable. They are interesting and clever and I really enjoyed working them. HOWEVER the paper they are printed on is very poor quality. It is barely better than newspaper paper. Although I really like the puzzles, I will not buy any more of these puzzle books.
I’ve solved Washington Post crossword puzzles for years, and am glad to find another publisher/paper with a similar style. The puzzles are definitely a challenge, but can be solved since they don’t include a lot of archaic or “dictionary†things. The humor included is always a treat. I strongly recommend the crossword puzzles from the Boston Globe!
Remember, my ratings are based on my skills, e.g. I am a general, non-fiction reader, and was once a proofreader. These puzzles take me 30-40 minutes, but there are always some clues that stump me. I judge that it wouldn't greatly challenge someone who's been doing puzzles for a few years, but still a little difficult for newbies.
Good challenging book of puzzles;I especially like it is spiral bound. Not very up to date; references are to times long gone by.
It's hard to find any crosswords with real paper these days.
An excellent collection and the binding allows it to lay flat on my clipboard.
Puzzles are of medium difficulty. Not too easy and not too hard.
