Overall, this was a very cute book that also was informative and interesting. However, I feel like it may have been advanced for a first-grade audience, particularly in the vocabulary used. For example, wording included “impressions,†“debris,†“geological,†and “sediment,†and all without any explanation. There was also a typo (“of†was used instead of “andâ€).There were some neat facts I think kids would enjoy, such as the etymology of the word “fossil†and how different types of fossils are formed. The illustrations are also good for kids – somewhat stylized but still realistic.At the end of the book there are several “connect the dots,†but the images didn’t seem on theme, as they weren’t of a fossil, etc. That was the only task or “worksheet†activity, so it seems a bit of a stretch to call this a workbook.The bottom line is, if you are looking for a short book that will keep a kid engaged visually, this is a good choice, but the vocabulary may be too advanced for the younger crowd.It should go without saying, but this is my fair, honest, and unbiased review of this product, and I only buy products that my family and I will actually use. This is a cute little book. The product description is pretty accurate. Most pages had only a sentence or 2 which seemed right for very young children. There were lots of cartoon-y type drawings. Some were very similar but it worked well with the text. Better written than usual for these books although there are a few editing issues. The English is better, but againthe photos are not labeled and or credited to whoever took them. This is a credibility issue all of these booksshare. It is illegal to take photos and put them in your book without saying where you got them. Photographersown the rights to their photos and they are most often copyrighted. I think the words are too long for most smallkids. My kids learn to read very young and are more advanced than others in their classes so they did not havea problem, but the average small child will not know or care what the words mean if they are too big. The bookdid not go into detail as to how a dig is done correctly, and did not say what animal was in a photo (not even one).Overall, better written but still with the same issues this publisher always has.I received this product at a discount or free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review of the product basedupon my own personal experience.
