This was a sweet little book that I ordered used, based on reading a biography of Alice Waters, where it was mentioned. It held a charm both by the author and its subjects. Interesting menus and enchanting recipes with cultural and historic reference. I am a shameless Francophile and this book was very satisfying in its portrayal of the subject and the geography. Very enjoyable book.
Recommended through a book on tape by Von Ancken. A peaceful, arcane interesting read -- not a page turner, but something to go back to a piece at a time and savor, like sipping a fine wine instead of gulping it.
a fun read, but one needs to keep in mind that De Groot's initial visit was some time ago. So it'd definitely not a travel guide. The recipes give you a good sense of the region
This is a wonderful account by a legendary food writer of his experience in a very French and traditional corner of the world at that moment away from the intrusion of nouvelle cuisine and commercialism. From sourcing the ingredients to partaking of the menu of the day at the auberge, there wasn' a moment when I wanted to skim and move on. I am a fan of food journals and this was one of the best. I will reread and reread.
this book, published in the early 70's takes on a new meaning for serious cooks seeking inspiration. when you read this book be prepared to be transported to a world before mass transport, the specter of iqf (individual guick freezing) and strawberries year round... this relates a tale of two strong women putting great regional food out; not because it is the trendy thing to do, but because it is the only option. instead of being repetitious, it shows the durability of the classics. read this book as a primer for alice waters and local eating.
There is a Brigadoon-like quality to this book, capturing the essence of an unique experience in this enchanting valley, never to be had in the same way again. The language is a treat, and the interpretation is magic, almost mythic, making one sigh and drool all the more.
Food, life, and terroir writing at it's absolute best. De Groot can really write; your nose, heart, stomach and minds eye will delight in this book. One of the best of the genre, right along with Rowan Jacobsen.
If it's the last thing I do, I'm going to that Auberge! (if only it were still there) The way he describes his first steps into the hidden valley, sound like the opening to The Sound of Music ... I read this book with growing love and fascination. It inspired me to study cooking at the French Culinary Institute. I haven't tried these specific recipes yet, though they sound like French classics. Thank you, thank you, for telling this story.
