In pre-WWI France two young girls meet and fall in love. They grow up and move to Paris and become part of the artistic renaissance of the between-wars period; they are present at the birth of Dadaism and Surrealism. As approaching war becomes evident they move to Jersey. During the Nazi occupation they wage their own war of resistance, papering the island with subversive leaflets. Eventually they get caught and sentenced to death, but are saved by the withdrawal of German troops ahead of the allied liberation. One dies not long after, her health ruined. The other lives on for many years until old age prompts her to end her life on her terms. "Once dead, I will no longer be aware of being without her. That's why the past eighteen years have been so difficult. It's not true what they say. Time heals nothing." A fictional biography of Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore, Never Anyone But You is the story of a great love and enduring partnership that spans the two 20th century world wars and the chaotic, socially liberating, artistically fertile period between them. It is an unsentimental portrait told with restrained, spare, evocative prose, and sheer pleasure to read. Recommended!
I am a sucker for a good period piece, especially a romantic one, and *especially* especially a queer one, so this book was just right up my alley. I liked the use of flashbacks, and thought the narrator's voice was clear and strong. Most of all, it was a beautiful love story.
This well-written book is based on a true story about two Frenchwomen who settled in the English Channel Islands and stayed during the German occupation...and resisted in an original and effective way.Considering this country in this time...and "leadership"--this is an inspiring story.
I loved this book!!! Remarkable characters and a storyline which became more fascinating as the story progressed. This was my first book by Rupert Thomson but it will certainly not be my last.
Immediate delivery of a great story
The depth of research is impressive. But the ability to capture the depth of profound intermingling of two souls to one another is stunning. The two women choose heroism and fidelity to their own moral compasses; thereby their island community, Europe, and the readers eternally benefit from their gifts to humankind.
It is a good depiction of the" artsy-fartsy" era of the thirties and forties and then into the war era
As I read this I felt I was reading an autobiography, so real were the characters, the settings and the historical personages. And I was sure that the author/narrator was a woman because Thomson so deftly captured a woman's point of view. The characters are mostly real, but portrayed by a manThis is the story of two Frenchwomen, Suzanne and her friend, then lover, then stepsister Claude, who came of age during the Surrealist era and barely survived the German occupation of the Channel Islands during World War 2. They met as adolescents, fell in love and eventually moved tp Paris where they met Dali and a host of other artists and authors. I know from reading Hemmingway, Tolkas, Stein, and Picasso, that characterizations of Parisian society and its artists and writers were on mark, Claude is haunted by her schizophrenic mother and falls into suicidal depression at times. Claude's father finally divorces her mother and marries Suzanne's mother, which gives them cover to live together in fairly closeted lesbian lives. It is in the Channel Islands that they decide to wage a secret propaganda war against the Germans. When caught, the Germans fail to believe that they have been outwitted by two elderly Frenchwomen and are certain they are hiding Resistance contacts.I started the book yesterday and couldn't stop reading until 3 am. The book is compelling and extraordinarily well-written. It also resurrects the story of two lesbians who have historically been overlooked. I look forward to reading more of Thomson's work.
