"Honorable Mention for the 2015 Hubert Morken Award for Best Book, Religion and Politics Section of the American Political Science Association""One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2014""One of The Middle East Channel’s Top Five Books of 2013, chosen by Marc Lynch""The Muslim Brotherhood has been pushed out of power in Egypt and Carrie Rosefsky Wickham . . . might appear to be publishing just too late. In fact, her book still matters."---Gerard Russell, Times Literary Supplement"[F]ine-grained, historically rich analysis."---Charles Tripp, London Review of Books"This timely publication emerges from Emory University political scientist Wickham's (Mobilizing Islam) long-term research into the institutional and ideological nuances of 'movement changes' within the Muslim Brotherhood--the Sunni revivalist organization that was the leading opponent of the Mubarak regime in Egypt before the popular uprising of January 2011. . . . This admirable study (based on hundreds of interviews) is a judicious, well-grounded plea for complexity in the depiction and analysis of Islamist movements." (Publishers Weekly)"[The Muslim Brotherhood] is a careful analysis that is meticulous in questioning the data from a position of critical reflection, demonstrating many years of research and experience and a genuine understanding of the region and its complexities by not taking simple statements at face value. . . . The extent to which analysis of this kind can derive valid causal inferences from observed data hinges on the contextual knowledge of the researcher, and it is here that this work truly excels. . . . The Muslim Brotherhood: Evolution of an Islamist Movement is not just a timely new book on a topic of public interest but a fine example of academic research."---Christina Hellmich, Times Higher Education"[O]utstanding. . . . The Muslim Brotherhood is an essential guide to understanding the historical background of the political crisis in Egypt today."---Joseph Richard Preville, Muscat Daily"[A] commanding study of the Brotherhood's long history."---Frederick Deknatel, National"Given Egypt's crucial position as the Arab world's most populous nation, it is especially welcome that Emory University's Carrie Rosefsky Wickham, has written The Muslim Brotherhood, an accessible and informative analysis of one of the most important and perhaps most misunderstood political organizations in the Middle East. . . . Wickham's book provides a fascinating historical account of the Muslim Brotherhood and its development over the decades, while also showing how misguided much of the commentary on the Muslim Brotherhood."---Matthew Feeney, American Conservative

From the Back Cover

"A timely and incisive look into the history, politics, and future of the Muslim Brotherhood by the foremost expert on Islamism in Egypt. Carrie Rosefsky Wickham has constructed a detailed account of how the Brotherhood confronts the challenges before it, and why and when it embraces change. Everyone concerned with the future of Egypt should read this book."--Vali Nasr, author of The Shia Revival and The Dispensable Nation"Meticulously researched and powerfully argued, Carrie Rosefsky Wickham's The Muslim Brotherhood is the most significant book about the Egyptian brotherhood since the publication in 1969 of Richard P. Mitchell's The Society of the Muslim Brothers. Essential for understanding the Egyptian uprising of 2011 and its aftermath."--James L. Gelvin, author of The Arab Uprisings: What Everyone Needs to Know"Given the profound political changes taking place in Egypt today, Wickham's in-depth, richly composed, and intimate analysis of the Muslim Brotherhood has never been so relevant or timely. This is a first-rate book on an important topic, written by a distinguished scholar, and utilizing an impressive array of sources."--John P. Entelis, Fordham University"Until now, there was no study that provides a portrait of the Muslim Brotherhood from its founding in the 1920s to today, and Wickham's comparative analysis of Jordan, Kuwait, and Morocco is unique in the literature. What is also distinctive about this book is that it does not concentrate on the extremism of Islamist movements, but rather on how they may become more active participants in regular political processes."--John O. Voll, Georgetown University

After reading several books on the Muslim Brotherhood (The Muslim Brotherhood: The History of the Middle East's Most Influential Islamist Group,The Muslim Brotherhood: From Opposition to Power,Muslim Extremism in Egypt: The Prophet and Pharaoh, With a New Preface for 2003), I think Wickham's is far and away the best single text on the topic.Beginning with the origins of the Brotherhood in the 1920s, Wickham shows how the Brotherhood developed deep grassroots support in Egypt and how these roots make the organization complex, diverse and often at odds with different factions within it. Among her conclusions: that the Brotherhood is not a homogenous group; they do not have a hidden Islamist agenda (the "taqiya" of conservative pundits: the idea that Muslims are mandated to lie in order to subvert existing systems). Rather, the Brotherhood's emphasis in the later 1970s and 80s is the result of former student leaders moderating the organization, and the result of the Brotherhood's "sustained interactions with individuals and organizations outside the Islamist movement." Wickham goes on to conclude that Morsi's election (and the Brotherhood's sweep of elections in 2011) was as much a function of the Brotherhood's democratic commitments as it was a function of their ideological commitment to Islam which is important to many rural Egyptians. Most importantly, Wickham argues that the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt (as elsewhere in the Islamic world) "cannot be said to be 'moderating' or 'not moderating' any more than they can be characterized as 'for' or 'against' democracy. Such facile generalizations gloss over the internal complexity of Islamist groups and understate the profound tensions and contradictions that permeate their agendas."The detail, depth, nuance and incisive critical analysis of the Muslim Brotherhood in this book is superb. This is not only cutting-edge scholarship, it is a brilliant and readable treatise on a complex institution that will no doubt continue to play a major role in Egypt. Anyone interested in gaining insight into contemporary politics in the Middle East in general and Egypt specifically, this is the text I recommend.

Very detailed analysis of the Egyptian chapter of Arab Spring. The description of Muslim Brotherhood consists of valuable interviews. Worth reading.

A great overview of the MB and post-Arab Spring Muslim politics. Wickham does a wonderful job of linking MB studies to broader political science debates.

Great reference text for the history and development of the Muslim Brotherhood.

If you want to know about The Brotherhood this is the book to read. It is academic, and dense, but worth the time to read.

Very interesting book to explain the history of the Muslim Brotherhood so one can grasp the events in the Middle East.

I have read a great deal of literature on the Muslim Brotherhood over the last three years, and I found this book to be by far the most insightful source on the MB's inter-organizational issues and agenda. I was quite surprised to see that it had such a poor overall rating on the whole. If you're looking for a book that delineates the specifics of Islamism as an ideology (and I would argue that treating Islamism as anything more than an idiom or identity through which an underlying [socioeconomic] ideology is filtered to be a folly in and of itself), this is not it. There are plenty of books explaining that, or one could even go to Wikipedia to learn about precisely what Islamism is. Wickham does exactly what she says she'll do in the book's title and traces the evolution of the Muslim Brotherhood and her research provides answers to questions like how did the Brotherhood become so powerful? The best part of this research, to me, is really the way in which she offers a lucid rendering of an organization full of immanent antagonisms and ideological division (partially BECAUSE Islamism alone is not a cohesive ideology). If you read this book, you'll have a much easier time understanding the dynamics of how it was possible for the Muslim Brotherhood to grow so powerful over decades and --this is to me the book's greatest feat -- it will enable you to seamlessly connect where this research leaves off to the Morsi regime's ouster that happened soon after this book's publication. Basically, one sees that the military and Tamarod's ousting of the Brotherhood's from power could not have been pulled off with legitimacy without the large scale dissent from within the organization that stemmed from predominantly ideological tensions (which often aligned with Egypt's generational divides), especially after the 2011 revolution. Wickham has even been consistent in her arguments since the July 2013 coup, too: [...] But yeah, this is a must-read for those who truly want to understand the Egyptian Uprising.

i had chosen to read the book in which I had expected to get acquainted with the proactive modus operrandi and overriding philosophy of the organization/brotherhood. While It is of the essence in the book, it is not so obviously addressed. My impression is that it instead described their reactive ways and means in hell raising operations. I actually tend to recollect that there were so many/too many names of the involved actors that It became hard to follow. It also becomes hard to identify the plot, the latter which is not immediately demonstrated, irrespective of the fact that the world Media continuously reports on a myriad of their activities which allows us all, as would be TV analysts, to frame the brotherhoods' ultimate intent. Nonetheless, it does discuss the organizations' activities and albeit makes for good educational readings. to summerize,I am now much more familiar with the group's raison d'etre, their existance and where they exist most.
